How Europress Carbon Steel helped create a more consistent heating system for a high-value cultivation environment.
Client: Tasmanian Botanics
Industry: Medicinal Cannabis Cultivation
Location: Tasmania
System: Europress Carbon Steel Press-Fit
Application: Growth chamber heating
The Challenge
For Tasmanian Botanics, consistency is critical.
As a vertically integrated medicinal cannabis producer, the company manages the complete production lifecycle, with controlled growing conditions playing an important role in producing consistent, high-quality crops.
The existing heating system wasn't providing the level of consistency required across the growing chambers.
But changing the system presented its own challenge.
With the potential value of a single crop approaching $500,000, taking a chamber offline for an extended period could have a significant impact on the business.
The new system needed to improve consistency while keeping installation time and disruption to an absolute minimum.
The Solution
Rather than simply replicate the existing welded galvanised pipework, the project called for a different approach.
Europress Carbon Steel press-fit pipework was designed and installed beneath the crop chambers to create a more consistent heating environment.
The system was designed around the specific requirements of the growing chambers, rather than treating the pipework as a standard installation.
Carbon steel was selected for its suitability to the application and its thermal characteristics, helping provide a more even heating environment throughout the chambers.
The press-fit connection also provided a significant advantage during installation.
Unlike traditional welded systems, Europress can be installed without welding or open-flame hot works.
Designing Around the Application
The success of this project wasn't simply about selecting carbon steel.
It was about understanding how the pipework needed to perform within the growing environment.
The Europress system was designed around the chamber layout and heating requirements to help deliver greater consistency across the growing area.
That meant looking beyond the pipe itself and considering:
- Chamber configuration
- Pipe positioning
- Heat distribution
- Installation access
- Minimising disruption
- The risks associated with hot works
- The value of the crop being protected
The result was a pipework system designed for the application, rather than an off-the-shelf approach.
Faster Installation
Installation time was particularly important.
Traditional welded pipework requires cutting, preparation, welding and finishing, which can significantly extend the time spent working within an operating facility.
Europress press-fit technology provided a much faster installation process.
For this project, installation was completed in approximately **one quarter of the time** required for the traditional approach, with press-fit installation capable of being **up to 10 times faster than welded systems** in suitable applications.
For Tasmanian Botanics, that meant less time working within the growing environment and reduced disruption to operations.
No Welding. No Open Flames.
In a facility protecting high-value crops, hot works create an additional consideration during installation.
Europress uses mechanical press-fit connections rather than welding.
That means the system can be installed without open flames or welding, making it particularly suited to applications where hot works need to be avoided.
Faster installation. No welding. No open flames.
The Result
The redesigned heating system provided Tasmanian Botanics with:
Greater consistency
A more even heating environment across the growing chambers.
Faster installation
Approximately one quarter of the installation time compared with the traditional welded approach.
Less disruption
A faster installation reduced the time required to work within an operating cultivation facility.
No hot works
Press-fit installation removed the need for welding and open flames.
A system designed for the application
The pipework was designed around the specific requirements of the growing chambers rather than simply replacing the existing system.
When the Design Matters as Much as the Product
For Tasmanian Botanics, the objective wasn't simply to replace pipework.
It was to create a more consistent growing environment while reducing installation time and disruption.
The pipe was the product. The design was the solution.
Europress Carbon Steel provided the material and connection technology. The system design brought those capabilities together to meet the requirements of a specialised growing environment.
That's where application knowledge makes a difference.
